How to Mix a Song: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Mixing is the process of taking all the individual tracks in your session — drums, bass, synths, vocals — and making them sound like one coherent thing. Balance, space, depth, and movement. That’s it.

Most beginners overcomplicate it or skip straight to plugins without a process. This guide gives you a repeatable workflow you can follow in any DAW — Logic Pro, FL Studio, Ableton, Pro Tools — to get a clean, balanced mix every time.


What Mixing Actually Is (And Why Most Beginners Overthink It)

Think of a mix as answering four questions:

  1. Balance — Can you hear everything? Does the most important element (usually vocals or lead melody) sit on top?
  2. Space — Does each element have its own place in the frequency spectrum? Are things bumping into each other?
  3. Depth — Does the mix feel flat or three-dimensional? Do some things sound close and others distant?
  4. Translation — Does it sound good on different speakers, not just your headphones?

Every tool you use — EQ, compression, reverb, automation — exists to answer one of those four questions. Keep that framing in mind as you go through the steps below. If you’re not sure why you’re reaching for a plugin, pause and ask which question it’s supposed to answer.


Before You Start: Set Yourself Up to Hear the Truth

The biggest mistake beginners make isn’t a bad EQ move — it’s mixing in a listening environment that lies to them. You can do everything right and still get a bad mix if you can’t trust what you’re hearing.

Your Monitoring Situation

If you’re on consumer earbuds or a laptop speaker, you’re working blind. You can’t hear what’s happening in the low end, and your mixes will be heavy, muddy, or hollow when played anywhere else.

The minimum workable setup: a decent pair of closed-back headphones (Sony MDR-7506, Beyerdynamic DT 770) or studio monitors in a room where you sit equidistant from both speakers. You don’t need treated walls or expensive gear — but you do need to know your speakers’ weaknesses and compensate for them.

Organize Your Session Before You Touch a Plugin

Before you drop a single EQ onto a track, spend ten minutes on your session:

  • Name every track — “Audio 1” tells you nothing. “Kick,” “808,” “Lead Vox,” “Adlib” tells you everything.
  • Color-code by group — drums one color, bass another, synths another, vocals another. Every major DAW supports this.
  • Group tracks and create busses — send all your drum tracks to a Drums bus, all vocals to a Vocals bus. This gives you a single fader for each group and keeps things manageable.

Mixing a disorganized session is like trying to cook in a dirty kitchen. Don’t do it.

Set Up a Reference Track

A reference track is a commercially released song in a similar genre that you think sounds great. You’ll A/B your mix against it throughout the process.

How to actually use it: import the reference into a new track in your session, turn off all processing on it, and level-match it so it’s roughly the same perceived loudness as your mix. Then flip between them as you work — not to copy it, but to catch problems. If the low end on your reference sounds tight and the low end on your track sounds boomy, that’s data.


Step 1: Gain Staging — Start Here, Every Time

Gain staging means setting all your track levels so they’re at a healthy signal level before you add any plugins. If you skip this, everything downstream — EQ, compression, saturation — gets unpredictable input and behaves unpredictably.

The target: each individual track should peak around −18 dBFS on average with the fader at unity (0 dB). Louder drums and 808s can sit a little hotter; quieter elements like room mics can sit lower. The point is that nothing is clipping and nothing is buried.

Common mistake: producers turn up their monitors when the mix feels quiet instead of bringing up the tracks. Don’t confuse monitor volume with mix level. Turn up your interface output, not your fader.

Once your gain staging is clean, reset every fader to 0 dB and start fresh. You’ll build your balance from there.


Step 2: EQ — Carve Out Space for Every Element

EQ is how you give each element its own space in the frequency spectrum so nothing covers up anything else. Think of it as real estate — every instrument gets its own plot, and you’re making sure nobody’s building on top of somebody else’s lot.

High-Pass Filter Everything (Almost)

Every instrument that doesn’t need sub-bass content should have a high-pass filter cutting the low end you can’t hear and don’t need. On most synth pads, guitars, and vocals, that’s somewhere between 80–150Hz. On hi-hats, it might be 300Hz or higher.

Don’t high-pass your kick, 808, bass synth, or anything that’s supposed to carry the low end.

The reason: low-frequency buildup is the #1 source of mud in a beginner mix. You can’t hear it clearly, but it accumulates and makes your mix sound heavy, dark, and indistinct. Cut the mud before you try to fix anything else.

Cut Problem Frequencies

Most mixing is subtractive — you cut what’s wrong before you add anything. The usual suspects:

  • 200–400Hz — this is where mud lives. If your mix sounds thick and indistinct, narrow a bell cut in this range and sweep until you hear it bloom open.
  • 400–600Hz — boxiness. Things sound like they’re coming out of a cardboard box. Cut here to add clarity.
  • 2–5kHz — harshness. If vocals or synths are hurting your ears or sounding brittle, this range is usually responsible.

Cut narrow (tight Q) when you’re looking for a problem frequency. Once you find it, you can widen the cut slightly.

Add Presence Where Needed

Use additive EQ sparingly and only after you’ve done the subtractive work. A gentle boost (1–3 dB) at 8–12kHz adds air and openness to vocals and synths. A subtle boost at 2–4kHz adds presence and cut-through. On drums, a boost around 5–8kHz can add punch and snap.

The rule: if you need more than 3–4 dB of additive EQ, something is wrong at the source — don’t reach for more boost, fix the root cause.


Step 3: Compression — Control the Dynamics

Compression turns down the loudest moments of a signal so you can raise the overall level without clipping. The result: the track sounds more consistent, sits better in the mix, and usually feels bigger.

What Compression Is Actually Doing

Imagine you’re tracking a vocalist who gets loud on the chorus and quiet on the verses. Without compression, you’re constantly chasing the level with the fader. With compression, the loud moments get turned down automatically so the quiet moments are more audible and the whole performance sits more evenly.

The same logic applies to drums, bass, synths, and your mix bus. Compression is a volume control on autopilot.

Attack and Release in Plain English

  • Attack — how fast the compressor responds to a loud peak. Slow attack (40–80ms on drums) lets the transient punch through before clamping down, which preserves snap and impact. Fast attack (1–5ms) catches everything immediately and can make things sound squashed.
  • Release — how fast the compressor lets go after the loud moment passes. Fast release makes things groove and breathe. Slow release can sound smooth but can also cause pumping if set wrong.

For most beginner uses: slow attack to keep the punch, medium release to let the groove breathe. Start there and adjust by ear.

Step 4: Reverb and Delay — Add Depth Without Drowning

Reverb and delay create the sense of a physical space. Used well, they make a mix feel three-dimensional and professional. Used badly, they turn a mix into a muddy wash where nothing is defined.

Use a Send/Return Setup, Not Inserts

Never put reverb directly on a track as an insert effect unless you’re going for a specific creative effect. Instead, create a reverb return track (an Aux in Logic, a Send channel in Ableton/FL), put the reverb plugin on that return track, and use send knobs on your individual tracks to route signal to it.

Why: it lets you control the ratio of dry to wet signal cleanly, you only need one reverb instance for the whole mix, and it sounds more cohesive because everything shares the same acoustic space.

Room vs. Hall, Short vs. Long

  • Short room reverb (0.4–0.8 seconds) — adds subtle space and presence to elements without making them sound far away. Good on drums, synths, and vocals where you want cohesion without obvious reverb.
  • Longer hall reverb (1.5–3+ seconds) — creates obvious depth and a sense of a large space. Use intentionally, not as a default.

Keep the reverb level low enough that you don’t notice it when it’s on — only notice when it’s off. If you can clearly hear the reverb tail, it’s probably too loud.

Delay for Width and Rhythm

A short slap delay (30–120ms, no feedback) on vocals adds width and a sense of space without sounding like a discrete echo. A rhythmic delay locked to the tempo (1/8th or dotted 1/8th) on a lead element adds movement and energy.

Pan the delay return slightly off-center for width without clutter.


Step 5: Set Your Levels and Automate

Once your EQ, compression, and effects are in place, do a static mix pass — bring every fader down and rebuild your balance from scratch, adding elements in order of importance. Kick, then 808/bass, then drums, then melodic elements, then vocals. Build the foundation first; let the top end ride on top.

Then automate for dynamics. Volume automation — subtle fader rides on the vocal, drop-outs on synths to create space, level bumps on the chorus to add energy — is what separates a professional mix from a flat one. You don’t need complex automation curves. A simple volume ride on the lead vocal takes ten minutes and transforms the feel of the track.


Step 6: Check Your Mix — Mono, Multiple Devices, Fresh Ears

This is the step most beginners skip, and it’s the reason most beginner mixes fall apart in the real world.

Check mono: collapse your mix to mono and listen. If your low end disappears, you have phase cancellation — common with 808s and layered bass. If a synth pad goes from wide to narrow and loses presence, it was relying on stereo width to exist in the mix. Mono reveals problems that stereo hides.

Check on multiple devices: phone speaker, earbuds, laptop speaker, car stereo, Bluetooth speaker. Each one will expose different problems. If the low end sounds great on your monitors but massive on the car, you’ve over-boosted. If the vocals disappear on earbuds but sit fine in your headphones, they need more presence.

The 10-minute rule: if you find a problem and you can fix it in 10 minutes, fix it now. If you’d have to rebuild sections of the mix, make a note and come back after a break or the next day with fresh ears. Ear fatigue is real — what sounds right after 4 hours of mixing often sounds off the next morning.


Step 7: Leave Headroom for Mastering

Mastering is a separate process from mixing. The mastering engineer (or mastering plug-in) needs headroom to work — if your mix is already at 0 dBFS or clipping on the master bus, there’s nothing to work with.

Before you export:

  • Check your master bus output meter — your peak level should land between −3 and −6 dBFS at the loudest point of the song
  • Remove any limiters or heavy compression from your master bus (unless you’re specifically doing a “limiter for loudness” rough mix check)
  • Export as 24-bit WAV at your session’s sample rate (44.1kHz or 48kHz)

If you’re sending to a mastering engineer, follow their export specs exactly. If you’re self-mastering, leave that headroom — you’ll thank yourself when you sit down to master.


Common Beginner Mixing Mistakes to Avoid

Even with a solid process, there are a few pitfalls worth knowing before you run into them:

  • Mixing at high volume — your ears lie to you when things are loud. Mix at conversation level (60–70 dB) most of the time, and only crank it briefly to check energy.
  • Skipping the reference track — without a reference, you have no calibration point and will drift toward whatever sounds good in isolation.
  • Soloing tracks too much — a track that sounds perfect in solo can sound terrible in context. Mix with everything playing as often as possible.
  • Too much reverb on everything — less is more. If your mix sounds muddy and distant, reverb is usually the first thing to pull back.
  • Never checking mono — say it again: check mono every time.
  • Over-mixing — you’ll reach a point where you’re moving things 0.1 dB at a time and it’s making no difference. Export it, sleep on it, and revisit tomorrow. Done is better than perfect.
