Gain Staging Tutorial: The 10-Minute Fix for Mixes That Sound Cheap
You recorded a vocal, it looked great on the meter, and the second you put a compressor on it the whole thing turned into mush. Or your beat sounds fine until you add the vocal, then everything gets brittle and thin and no amount of EQ fixes it.
That’s not a plugin problem. That’s a levels problem, and it’s the most common one I see in home sessions. This gain staging tutorial is the fix — it’s the boring step nobody posts about, it takes about ten minutes per session, and it does more for your sound than any plugin you’re thinking about buying. Real talk: half the tracks people send me for mixing have this one issue, and half the “my mix sounds cheap” DMs go away once it’s sorted.
What Gain Staging Actually Means
Gain staging just means keeping your signal at a sensible level at every point it passes through — from the mic, into the interface, into your DAW, through each plugin, onto the bus, and out the master.
Think of it like water pressure through a series of pipes. Too little and nothing comes out the other end. Too much and the pipes start rattling. Every stage has a level it’s happy at, and your job is to hand the next stage something it can work with.
The number that matters: around -18 dBFS average. That’s where you want most tracks sitting before you start processing them. Not peaks — average. Your peaks can be up around -10 or -6, that’s fine. It’s the loudness the meter sits at most of the time that you’re setting.
Why -18? Because that’s roughly where analog gear used to run at “zero,” and nearly every plugin you own — compressors, saturators, tape emulations, amp sims — was modeled on gear that expected that level. Feed one a signal slammed at -1 dB and it behaves like you’re driving it into the red, because you are. That’s where the harshness comes from.
Stage 1: Set Your Gain at the Mic, Not in the Mix
Gain staging starts before you hit record. Whatever you capture is the foundation, and you can’t add back what you never got.
Set your interface’s preamp knob so the loudest part of the performance — the ad-lib, the yell, the part they get excited on — peaks somewhere around -10 to -6 dBFS in your DAW. Everything else will naturally land closer to -18 average, which is exactly where you want it.
Have them perform the loudest thing in the song during soundcheck, then set your knob to that. Not their speaking voice. Not the first verse. The loudest moment.
Two failure modes to avoid:
- Too hot. If you’re touching red, you’ve clipped, and clipped audio can’t be un-clipped. Ever. That crunch is baked in.
- Too quiet. If you’re recording at -40, you’re capturing more of your preamp’s noise floor relative to the voice, and turning it up later turns the hiss up with it.

Stage 2: Level the Imported Tracks Before You Touch a Plugin
If you’re mixing someone else’s stems, or beats you bought, or vocals recorded in another studio, you don’t control stage one. You control this one.
Open your session, solo each track, play the loudest section, and look at the meter. Anything sitting way above or way below -18 average gets adjusted.
Do this with a gain plugin — not the fader. This is the part that trips people up, so here’s the distinction:
- Gain plugin (first slot, before everything): sets how hot the signal hits your processing. Set it once, leave it.
- Fader: sets how loud that track is in the balance. You’ll move it constantly all session.
Every DAW has something for this. Logic has Gain. FL has the mixer track’s input knob or Fruity Balance. Ableton has Utility. Pro Tools has Trim. They all do the same job — turn the signal up or down before it reaches your plugin chain.

Stage 3: Check the Level Going Into Every Plugin
Here’s the part nobody tells you: plugins are not level-independent. They react differently depending on how hard you hit them.
Compressors are the obvious one. A compressor’s threshold is an absolute number — set it to -20 dB and it starts working at -20 dB, full stop. If your track comes in at -6 average, that setting is now crushing every single note instead of catching the loud ones. You didn’t set the compressor wrong; you fed it wrong. But it’s not just compressors:
- Saturation and tape plugins add more distortion the harder you drive them. That’s the whole point of them — which means input level is the main control, whatever knob you’re turning.
- Amp sims and guitar pedals are modeled on gear that responds to input level. Hot in equals dirty out.
- Analog-modeled EQs often add a little harmonic color that scales with level.
- Clean digital EQs and delays mostly don’t care — but boosting +9 dB at 3k on a track already near zero will push whatever comes next into clipping.
The habit worth building: watch each plugin’s input meter, not just its output. Most plugins show you both. If the input is pinned, pull the gain plugin down before you start turning the plugin’s knobs.
Stage 4: Buses and Groups Are Where It Piles Up
You gain staged twelve tracks perfectly. Then you routed all eight drum tracks to one drum bus, and that bus is now clipping — because eight signals summing together get louder than any one of them.
Summing adds. Every time you group tracks, check the bus level and pull the bus fader (or drop a gain plugin on it) until it’s back in range before you process it. Same for your vocal bus, your instrument bus, and anything else you’re grouping.
A clipping bus sounds exactly like a clipping master, and it hides better. People spend an hour on the stereo out never realizing the damage happened two stops earlier.
Stage 5: Leave Headroom on the Master
Your master fader should never be doing gain-staging work. If it’s pulled down to -8 just to stop the meter from going red, the problem is upstream — go pull down the buses, or better, pull down individual tracks.
Target: your final bounce peaks around -6 dBFS with the master fader at 0.
That -6 dB of space is what a mastering engineer needs to work with. Hand someone a mix that’s already touching zero and the first thing they have to do is turn it down, which means all your careful decisions get squeezed into whatever room is left. The 10-Minute Gain Staging Routine
Here’s the whole thing as a checklist. Run it at the start of every session and it becomes automatic:
- Set input gain at the source. Loudest part of the performance peaks -10 to -6.
- Import and level. Gain plugin in slot one on every track, adjust until the average sits near -18.
- Build a static mix with faders. No plugins yet — just balance and pan.
- Process, watching input meters. Every compressor, saturator, and amp sim gets checked at the input.
- Check every bus. Groups sum louder. Pull them back before processing.
- Confirm master fader at 0 and the mix peaking around -6.
Ten minutes. That’s it. And the payoff isn’t subtle — your compressors start behaving predictably, your saturation stops sounding like distortion, your low end stops turning to soup. Three Mistakes That Undo All of It
Using the fader to gain stage. The fader comes after the plugin chain in almost every DAW. Pulling it down doesn’t change what’s hitting your compressor — it just makes the already-mangled signal quieter. Gain plugin first, always.
Normalizing everything to peak at 0. Normalize sets the peak, not the average, and it sets it exactly where you don’t want it. A snare with sharp transients and a sustained pad both normalized to 0 will have wildly different perceived loudness, and both will be hitting your plugins too hard.
Gain staging after you’ve mixed. Change your input levels late and every threshold-based setting you dialed in becomes wrong at once. Do it first. It’s a foundation, not a polish step. That one shows up constantly in the list of common mixing mistakes beginners make.

You don’t need a new interface, a better compressor, or the plugin bundle that’s on sale this week. You need your signal sitting where your gear expects it. Every pro engineer does this without thinking about it — that’s the only difference, and it’s a habit, not a talent.
