Logic Pro X Mixing Tutorial: The Workflow That Actually Finishes Songs

Logic gives you seven compressor models, two full reverb engines, and about forty other plugins the second you install it. That’s the problem. Most people open the mixer, see a wall of options, start clicking things at random, and three hours later the mix sounds worse than the rough.

This Logic Pro X mixing tutorial is the fix — not a plugin tour, but the actual order I work in. Same order every session, stock plugins only, nothing you need to buy. Follow it start to finish and you’ll get a mix that sounds intentional instead of one that sounds like a pile of plugins. (Quick note: Apple dropped the “X” a few versions back, so if your splash screen just says Logic Pro, you’re in the right place.)


Step 1: Set Up the Session Before You Touch a Fader

Mixing decisions get made faster in a session you can read. Ten minutes here saves an hour later.

Open the Mixer with X, then:

  • Name every track what it actually is. “Audio 7” is not a vocal.
  • Color-code by group — drums one color, vocals another, melodic elements a third. Your eyes find things before your brain does.
  • Delete what you’re not using. Muted takes, empty tracks, that fourth 808 layer you never turned on. If it isn’t in the song, it isn’t in the session.
  • Consolidate messy regions with Bounce in Place so you’re mixing audio, not fighting a MIDI instrument that changes every time you hit play.

The rule: if you can’t find a track in three seconds, you’ll avoid fixing it. That’s how mixes end up with one problem nobody ever addressed.


Step 2: Gain Stage First (The Step Everyone Skips)

Here’s the thing about Logic: its stock plugins are modeled to behave best when the signal hitting them sits around -18 dBFS average, not slammed near zero. Feed a Compressor a signal that’s peaking at -1 dB and it’ll react like you insulted it, no matter how carefully you set the threshold.

So before any processing, put Logic’s Gain plugin at the top of each channel strip and adjust until the track’s meter is averaging somewhere around -18 to -12 dB on its loudest section. Not the peaks — the average.

Use the Gain plugin for this, not the fader. The fader is for balance, and you’re going to move it constantly. Gain staging should stay put once it’s set.

If your imported stems are already crushed and clipping, gain staging won’t rescue them — that’s a recording problem, and the mistakes post covers why it keeps happening.


Step 3: Build the Static Mix With Faders Only

No plugins. No EQ. Just faders and pan. Give yourself twenty minutes.

Start with whatever carries the song — in hip-hop and R&B that’s usually the drums and 808, then vocals, then everything else fills in around them. Pull faders down rather than pushing them up; if everything creeps toward the top you lose headroom and you’ll be fighting the master bus all night.

Pan the things that can move. Doubles hard left and right, hats slightly off-center, keys wide. Kick, snare, bass, and lead vocal stay center — they’re the spine.

If the song doesn’t feel right with just faders, no plugin is going to fix it. A weak arrangement mixed brilliantly is still a weak arrangement. Step 4: Channel EQ — Subtract Before You Add

Channel EQ is the single most useful plugin Logic ships, and most people use maybe a third of it.

Open it and turn on the analyzer (button on the left). Now you can see what you’re hearing, which is the fastest way to learn frequencies.

My order of operations on almost every track:

  1. High-pass filter first. Roll off everything below where the track actually lives — around 80–100 Hz on vocals, 200–300 Hz on hats and shakers, 400 Hz+ on anything thin and high. Leave the kick and 808 alone. This one move clears more mud than any other single decision.
  2. Find and cut the problem. Boost a narrow band 6 dB or so, sweep until something sounds ugly, then cut there instead — usually 2–5 dB is plenty. Muddiness hides in 200–500 Hz; boxiness around 400–800 Hz; harshness in 2–5 kHz.
  3. Boost last, and wide. Broad, gentle boosts (1–3 dB, wide Q) for tone. Narrow boosts almost always sound artificial.

Cuts fix problems. Boosts create character. Do them in that order.


Step 5: Compressor — Pick One Model and Stop Browsing

Logic’s Compressor has seven circuit models in a dropdown at the top. Here’s the honest version so you can stop auditioning them:

  • Studio VCA — clean and controlled. Default choice for vocals.
  • Platinum Digital — the most transparent. Good on buses and anything you just need to hold in place.
  • Vintage FET — aggressive, colorful, that punchy 1176 sound. Great on drums and rap vocals.
  • Vintage Opto — slow and smooth. Nice on sung vocals and bass.

Pick one. Set 2–4 dB of gain reduction on the loudest sections, ratio around 3:1 for vocals and 4:1 for drums, then use auto-release until you know what you’re listening for. Match the makeup gain so bypassing the plugin doesn’t change the volume — otherwise “louder” will trick you into thinking “better” every time.

Step 6: Buses and Sends — Where Logic Mixes Get Professional

This is the step that separates a mix that sounds “done” from one that sounds like eight loud tracks.

Reverb on a send, not on the track. In the channel strip’s Send slot, choose Bus 1. Logic creates an Aux channel automatically. Put ChromaVerb on that Aux, set its Mix to 100% wet, and pick a preset in the Room or Plate family to start. Now every track can share that one space by turning up its send — which is how real rooms work, and why sends sound more natural than sticking a reverb on each channel.

Group with Track Stacks. Select all your drum tracks, right-click, and create a Summing Stack. Now you’ve got one fader for the whole kit and one place to put bus compression. Do the same for vocals — lead, doubles, and ad-libs into one stack, with a light compressor (Platinum Digital, 2 dB of gain reduction) gluing them together.

Sidechain lives in the top-right of the Compressor. Put a Compressor on your 808 or bass, open the Side Chain dropdown, and select your kick track. Now the bass ducks every time the kick hits, which is how you get low end that punches instead of smearing. The full sidechain walkthrough is here if you want the exact settings.

Step 7: Automation Is the Part Nobody Tells You About

Press A to show automation lanes. This is where a static mix becomes a mix that breathes.

The three moves worth learning first:

  • Vocal volume automation. Instead of squashing a vocal with more compression, ride the fader. Pull down the loud phrases, push up the words that disappear. This is what makes vocals sit perfectly without sounding lifeless.
  • Reverb send automation. Turn the send up on the last word of a phrase, back down for the verse. Instant space without washing out the whole song.
  • Section-level lifts. Bring the drum stack up half a dB in the chorus. Nobody will consciously notice — everybody will feel it.

Set the automation mode on the channel to Latch, hit play, and move things with your mouse. Logic writes it as you go, and you can clean up the nodes after.

Automation is the difference between a mix that’s correct and a mix that’s alive.


Step 8: Leave the Master Bus Mostly Alone

Put a Loudness Meter on your stereo out so you can see what’s happening. Beyond that, if you’re sending this off to be mastered, leave the master bus empty and bounce with your peaks landing around -6 dB — that headroom is what a mastering engineer needs to work with.

If this mix is going straight to streaming with no mastering stage, a single Adaptive Limiter on the stereo out with 2–3 dB of gain reduction gets you in the neighborhood. Just know that’s a compromise, not a master.

Then bounce, listen in the car, listen on your phone, and write down three things to fix. Not thirty. Three. That’s how a mix actually gets finished, and it’s the same discipline behind everything that makes a mix sound professional.
