Sidechain Compression Tutorial: Make Your Kick and Bass Stop Fighting

Your kick and your bass are fighting. You can hear it — every time the kick lands, the low end turns to mush, and turning the bass down just makes the whole track feel thin. You’ve probably been told the fix is a sidechain compression tutorial, and then watched ten of them that all start with three minutes of waveform theory before anyone touches a knob.

Let me break this down the way I wish someone had for me. Sidechain compression is not a special effect. It’s a volume move — one sound automatically ducks out of the way of another. That’s the whole idea. Once you get that, the rest is just setup.

What Sidechain Compression Actually Does

Normal compression turns a sound down when that same sound gets too loud. Sidechain compression turns a sound down when a different sound gets loud.

So instead of the bass compressor reacting to the bass, you tell it: “watch the kick. Every time the kick hits, duck the bass for a split second.” The bass drops out of the way, the kick punches through the gap, and then the bass comes right back. Your ear barely notices the dip, but it absolutely notices that the low end is suddenly clean.

That’s the magic: two sounds sharing the same space by taking turns instead of stacking on top of each other. The kick and the 808 both live in the low end. There isn’t room for both at full volume at the same instant — so you let the kick win for a few milliseconds.

Why Your Low End Turns to Mush Without It

Here’s the thing nobody tells you. A kick and a bass aren’t “too loud” individually — the problem is they hit at the same time. When they overlap, their energy adds up, and that pile-up around 40–80Hz is what eats your headroom and makes everything sound boomy and undefined.

You can try to fix that with EQ, and you should do some of that work too (I walked through the low-end side of this in how to EQ bass in a mix). But EQ is a static move — it carves the same notch all the time, even when the kick isn’t playing. Sidechain is dynamic. It only ducks the bass when the kick is actually there, and leaves it alone the rest of the time.

That’s why sidechain compression beats just yanking the bass down with a fader. You keep the bass loud and full everywhere except the exact moments it would clash.

How to Set It Up in Logic Pro

I produce in Logic, so here’s the exact workflow. The concept is identical in FL Studio, Ableton, or Pro Tools — only the menu names change.

  1. Put a Compressor on your bass track. Not the kick. The compressor goes on the sound you want to duck, which is the bass.

  2. Find the Sidechain menu. It’s in the top-right corner of Logic’s Compressor window. Click it and choose your kick track as the source. Now the compressor is listening to the kick instead of the bass.

  3. Set a fast attack. Somewhere around 1–5ms. You want the bass to duck the instant the kick lands, not lazily fade down after it.

  4. Set the release to taste. This is the knob that matters most. The release decides how fast the bass comes back up after each kick. Start around 80–120ms and adjust by ear — too fast and you get an audible flutter, too slow and the bass never fully returns.

  5. Pull the threshold down until you see 3–6dB of gain reduction on each kick hit. That’s your starting point. More than 6dB and you’re heading into obvious-pump territory, which is a style choice, not a default.

If you can see the bass meter dip in time with the kick and the low end suddenly feels cleaner, it’s working. That’s the entire setup. You just made room where there wasn’t any.

The Part Where People Overdo It

Real talk: the first time sidechain clicks for you, you’re going to slap it on everything and crank it. We’ve all done it. Then the whole mix starts breathing in and out like it’s doing cardio.

Sidechain comes in two flavors, and it helps to know which one you’re going for:

  • Invisible sidechain — 2–4dB of reduction, fast release. The goal is that nobody can hear the compression, they just notice the low end is tight. This is what you want on 90% of trap, R&B, and hip-hop.

  • Pumping sidechain — 6dB or more, slower release, often the whole mix ducking to the kick. This is the deliberate “whoomp” you hear in EDM and house. It’s a creative effect, not a cleanup tool.

If you’re not making dance music, aim for invisible. When in doubt, use less. The mix should sound clean, not seasick. This same restraint applies to regular compression too — if you’re still shaky on the basics there, start with the beginner’s guide to compression and come back.

Three Quick Ways to Use It Beyond Kick and Bass

Once the core idea sticks, sidechain is useful all over a mix. A few moves I reach for:

Duck a pad or synth under the vocal. Stick a compressor on the synth, sidechain it to the lead vocal, and set a gentle 2–3dB duck. Now the synth politely steps back every time the vocal comes in, and your lead sits forward without you riding the fader.

Tighten a busy 808 under the kick — same as the bass move, but 808s ring out longer, so a slightly slower release keeps the sustain from getting chopped.

Control reverb wash. Put the compressor on your reverb return and sidechain it to the dry vocal. The reverb ducks while the vocal sings and blooms in the gaps, so you get a big space without smearing the words.

Notice the pattern: anytime two things compete for the same spot, sidechain lets one yield to the other automatically instead of you automating volume by hand.

Matching the Release to Your Beat

The release knob is where most of the magic and most of the mistakes live, so it’s worth slowing down on. Release is the time it takes the bass to climb back to full volume after the kick triggers the duck. Too short and you hear a fast flutter as the bass jumps back in; too long and the bass never recovers before the next kick, so your low end just sits quiet and lifeless.

The trick is to tie the release to the tempo and the spacing of your kicks. On a slow, spacious beat — think 70 BPM R&B with a kick every beat or two — you have room for a longer release, maybe 120–200ms, and the bass has time to bloom back up between hits. On a fast trap beat with rolling kicks and triplet patterns, that same setting would choke the bass completely. Pull the release way down, sometimes to 40–60ms, so the bass snaps back in the gaps between rapid hits.

Here’s the move that makes it click: solo the kick and bass together, then watch the bass meter while you turn the release knob. You’re looking for the bass to recover smoothly right before the next kick lands — not gasping back in late, not flatlined. When the meter rises and falls in a clean, steady rhythm that matches the groove, your ears will agree. Set it there and move on. Don’t overthink the exact number; the right release is the one where the low end grooves instead of pumps.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A few traps I see constantly, and the quick fix for each:

  • Compressor on the wrong track. It goes on the sound that ducks (bass), keyed from the sound that triggers it (kick). Backwards is the number one beginner mistake.
  • Attack too slow. If the duck feels mushy and late, speed up the attack. You want the bass out of the way before the kick’s transient, not after.
  • Release fighting the tempo. On fast hi-hat-heavy beats a long release never lets the bass recover between hits. Shorten it until the bass breathes again.
  • Using it to fix a bad arrangement. If your kick and bass are playing the exact same rhythm in the same octave, no compressor saves that. Sometimes the fix is writing the bassline to dodge the kick in the first place.

You Already Have Everything You Need

You don’t need a fancy plugin for this. The stock compressor in your DAW does sidechain perfectly — Logic’s does, and so does every other one. This is a workflow skill, not a gear purchase. Every producer whose low end you admire is doing some version of this exact move, usually with the same stock tools you already own.

Set it up on one track today. Put a compressor on your bass, key it to your kick, dial in 3–4dB of reduction with a fast attack, and just listen to the kick punch through. That one move will clean up more of your low end than any plugin you could buy.
