How to EQ Bass in a Mix for a Clean Low End
Bass problems are the most common reason a mix sounds amateur — and the most misdiagnosed. The bass is boomy on big speakers, disappears on earbuds, fights the kick, or just sounds undefined. Most producers respond by reaching for a boost somewhere and hoping. That makes it worse.
EQ’ing bass isn’t about making the bass sound good in isolation. It’s about making it sit correctly inside everything else — the kick, the sub, the pads, and whatever else is occupying the low end. This guide gives you a step-by-step process to do exactly that, with a separate section for 808s because they’re a different instrument with different rules.
Why Bass EQ Is Different From Everything Else
Low frequencies are felt, not just heard
The sub range — roughly 20–60Hz — doesn’t translate through most playback systems. Laptop speakers roll it off entirely. Earbuds boost it artificially. A phone speaker can’t reproduce it at all. Only a subwoofer, a good pair of studio monitors, or a car with a proper setup will give you an accurate picture.
This means you can have a bass EQ that sounds perfect on your reference monitors and completely destroys the mix everywhere else. The fix isn’t to mix without bass. It’s to make EQ decisions that work across multiple playback environments, which is why step 6 of this workflow (checking in mono) is non-negotiable.
Your monitors probably lie to you
Consumer headphones boost bass frequencies to make music sound “exciting.” Budget studio monitors roll off below 60Hz because they don’t have the driver size to reproduce it accurately. Higher-end closed-back headphones smear the stereo image in ways that make the low end feel bigger or smaller than it is.
None of this means you can’t mix with your gear. It means you have to know your gear’s bias and compensate. If your headphones pump the bass, you’ll tend to cut too much. If your monitors roll off below 80Hz, you’ll add too much sub. Reference on multiple systems before making final calls — especially below 100Hz.
The Bass Frequency Map
Before you touch anything, know what’s where:

Most bass EQ problems live in the mud zone (120–300Hz). That’s where things get boomy, undefined, and congested. It’s also the range beginners over-protect because it makes the bass “sound big” in headphones. Cut there first before you do anything else.
Step-by-Step: How to EQ Bass in a Mix
Step 1 — Set your levels before touching EQ
EQ doesn’t fix a balance problem. If the bass is too loud in the mix, it’ll sound muddy no matter how good your EQ moves are — because it’s masking everything else with excess energy.
Start with the fader. Get your kick and bass balanced by volume first. A rough rule: the kick and bass together should feel like a single unified low-end bed, not two separate elements competing. Once that balance is close, then open the EQ.
Step 2 — High-pass filter? Only if there’s junk below 40Hz
This is where a lot of mixing advice goes wrong. You’ll hear “always high-pass the bass at 60–80Hz.” Don’t do that. If the bass part — especially an 808 or a synth bass — has meaningful content in the 40–80Hz range, a high-pass there will hollow it out.
The actual rule: high-pass to remove truly inaudible rumble (below 30–40Hz on bass guitar, maybe lower on 808). Use your ears and a spectrum analyzer. If there’s nothing useful below 40Hz, clean it up. If the fundamental is sitting at 50Hz, leave it alone.
Step 3 — Find and cut the boom (the mud zone sweep)
This is the most impactful EQ move on bass. Here’s the workflow:
- Set a narrow Q (around 4–6) on a bell EQ
- Boost it 6–8dB
- Sweep slowly from 120Hz up to 300Hz while the track plays
- Listen for the frequency where the bass gets most bloated and resonant
- Once you find it, flip the boost to a cut — cut 3–6dB at that frequency with a moderate Q
Don’t do this in solo. Do it with the full mix playing so you can hear what’s actually clashing.
Step 4 — Protect the body
After the mud cut, check that you haven’t hollowed out the 80–120Hz range. This is where the bass has its weight — the physical presence that makes it feel solid. If you’ve cut too broadly, the bass will sound thin and pointless.
A useful test: play the mix without the bass for a few seconds, then bring it back in. You should feel a clear low-end foundation arrive. If the bass disappearing barely changes anything, it’s not carrying enough body — which means you’ve cut too much or the levels were off to begin with.
Step 5 — Boost for attack and definition (if needed)
On small speakers and earbuds, bass is often inaudible — not because it’s gone, but because those speakers can’t reproduce the low fundamentals. The trick to making bass translate on small playback is to boost the upper harmonics: the 1–3kHz range, where the attack, click, or pluck of the bass lives.
A gentle boost here (2–3dB, wide Q) gives the bass something that translates even when the sub doesn’t. This is especially useful on live bass guitar with pick attack. On 808s, this can add unwanted harshness, so be conservative.
Step 6 — Check in mono
Before you commit to anything, flip your mix to mono and listen. Bass has a tendency to fall apart in mono due to phase issues, stereo width, or frequency masking that was hiding a problem in stereo.
In mono, the bass should still feel full and defined. If it sounds thin or disappears, something is wrong — usually a phase issue with a stereo plugin earlier in the chain, or the bass and kick are canceling each other.
Most mixing software has a mono button somewhere in the master chain. Use it. This single check will catch more bass EQ problems than any EQ move.
Making Kick and Bass Work Together
The kick and the bass are trying to own the same real estate. The solution isn’t just “EQ them differently” — it’s deciding upfront who owns which frequency band and making sure they don’t overlap.
A common approach:
- Kick owns the punch (60–80Hz impact) and the attack (3–5kHz click)
- Bass owns the sub (40–60Hz) and the body (100–160Hz warmth)
Your specific split depends on the track. But if the kick has a strong fundamental at 70Hz and so does the bass, they’ll fight. One of them needs to yield — either notch the bass at 70Hz, or notch the kick, depending on which one you want to feel more in that range.
The other tool is sidechain compression: when the kick hits, the bass ducks slightly. This creates a pumping rhythm effect where the kick pokes through while the bass holds the low-end foundation between hits. It’s not about volume — it’s about clarity and space. How to EQ an 808 (Different Rules)
The 808 is not a bass guitar. Treating it like one is a fast path to a muddy trap mix.
An 808’s sound is almost entirely its fundamental frequency and how that note sustains and decays. The sub IS the instrument — not a side effect of it. When you high-pass aggressively or carve out the body the same way you would on a live bass, you’re removing the actual sound.
Key differences for 808 EQ:
High-pass conservatively. On a bass guitar, a high-pass at 60–80Hz cleans up subsonic junk without hurting the tone. On an 808, the fundamental might be sitting at 45–65Hz. High-passing there removes the sub entirely. High-pass at 25–35Hz at most — just removing inaudible rumble.
Harmonics matter more. On small speakers, an 808’s sub is completely inaudible. This is where saturation comes in: adding soft-clipping or tape saturation to the 808 generates upper harmonics (200Hz–1kHz) that translate on earbuds and phones. You’ll often do less EQ work on an 808 and more harmonic shaping via saturation. That technique is worth its own post — coming soon.
Pitch and tuning come first. Before EQ, make sure the 808 is tuned to the key of the track. An out-of-tune 808 will clash with every chord and no amount of EQ will fix it. Tune first, then EQ.
Common Bass EQ Mistakes
Boosting at 60Hz when the mix sounds thin. The mix sounds thin because you cut too much. Boosting at 60Hz usually muddies the kick, makes the mix boom, and doesn’t fix the thinness — it just adds a different problem. If the bass sounds thin, check whether you over-cut in the mud zone, and whether the level is where it needs to be.
EQ’ing in solo. Your bass will always sound different in context than it does in solo. A solo’d bass should probably sound slightly thin and a little bright — because the mix is filling in the low end around it. If it sounds perfect in solo, it might be masking everything else in context.
Treating every bass the same. An 808, a synth bass, a DI’d bass guitar, and an amped bass recording all have different starting points and different problems. An 808 needs pitch-check and harmonic work. A DI’d bass might need significant high-mids to sound defined. A live amp recording might have room tone to manage. The frequency map above applies to all of them, but the specific cuts and boosts won’t be identical.
When You’re Still Not Getting It
Sometimes the bass problem is upstream of EQ. These are the things to check before you keep tweaking:
- Level — Is the bass actually at the right volume in the mix, or is it too loud and creating the illusion of mud?
- Arrangement — Are too many elements fighting in the low end (pads, keys, synth bass, kick, 808 all active at once)?
