How to Mix Trap Beats: The Full Walkthrough (808s, Hats, and Vocal Space)

Your trap beat slaps in your headphones and falls apart everywhere else. The 808 disappears on phone speakers, the hi-hats stab you in the ear in the car, and when a vocal goes on top, everything turns into soup. If you’ve been searching for how to mix trap beats and getting generic “EQ and compress everything” advice, this is the specific version.

Here’s the thing about trap: it’s a minimal genre that punishes sloppy mixing. A rock mix has twenty tracks hiding your mistakes. A trap beat has an 808, some drums, a dark melody loop, and a ton of empty space — every element is exposed. That’s actually good news, because it means fixing five things fixes the whole mix.

Start With Gain Staging, Not Plugins

Before you touch an EQ, pull every fader down and rebuild the balance. Trap beats made from kits and loops almost always come in hot — stacked samples slamming the master bus before you’ve done anything.

Bring the 808 in first and set it so your master peaks around -10 to -6 dB. Then bring everything else in around it. The 808 is the foundation of a trap mix — everything else gets balanced against it, not the other way around.

If your channels are clipping before the mixing starts, no plugin chain saves you. Get the balance right at unity and half the “my beat sounds off” problems disappear before you’ve opened a single plugin.

The 808: Make It Knock Everywhere, Not Just in Headphones

The 808 is where most trap mixes live or die. Two problems show up constantly: the 808 is all sub (invisible on small speakers) or the 808 and kick are fighting (mud on every speaker).

Give it harmonics so phones can hear it

Phone and laptop speakers physically can’t reproduce much below ~100 Hz. If your 808 is pure sub, most listeners literally never hear it. The fix is saturation or distortion — it generates harmonics higher up the spectrum that your ear reads as bass even when the sub itself is gone.

Put a saturation plugin on the 808 and push it until you hear the note clearly on a phone speaker, then back off a touch. In Logic Pro, the stock Phat FX or even a light Overdrive works. You’re not making it dirty — you’re making it audible. Travis Scott and Metro Boomin 808s aren’t clean sine waves; they’re saturated so they translate everywhere.

Stop the kick and 808 from fighting

The kick and the 808 both live in the low end, and when they hit together you get a smeared thump instead of a punch. You have two tools here.

First, EQ them into their own lanes: pick whether the kick or the 808 owns the sub (usually the 808 in trap), high-pass the kick around 30–40 Hz, and let the kick’s punch live in the 60–100 Hz beater range. I go deeper on carving low-end space in how to EQ bass — the same logic applies to 808s.

Second, sidechain the 808 to the kick — a fast, subtle duck so the kick’s transient punches through. A few dB of gain reduction with a fast release is plenty. Full setup is in the sidechain compression tutorial if that’s new to you.

One or the other often works. Both together is the pro-mix move.

Drums: Punchy, Not Loud

Trap drums are mostly one-shot samples that arrive pre-processed. So the mistake to avoid is over-compressing samples that were already compressed when they were made.

For the kick, tune it to the key of the beat if the sample has a clear pitch — a kick clashing with the 808’s note sounds wrong in a way most beginners can’t identify. For the snare or clap, a short reverb (small room or plate, under a second) adds size without washing it out. Snappy and dry reads amateur; a little space reads expensive.

Keep the snare’s crack around 200 Hz for body and 2–5 kHz for the slap. If it’s stabbing your ears, cut around 3–4 kHz before you reach for volume. Punch comes from contrast — a controlled low end and a clean transient — not from pushing faders up.

Hi-Hats: Cut Through Without Cutting Heads Off

Hi-hat rolls are the signature of trap, and they’re also the number one source of ear fatigue in beginner mixes. The pattern needs to be heard clearly at a volume that doesn’t hurt.

Start by high-passing the hats around 300–500 Hz — there’s nothing down there but mud. If they’re harsh, the offending zone is usually 8–10 kHz; a gentle cut there keeps the sizzle without the ice pick. Then pan for width: main hat pattern slightly off-center, rolls and extra percussion further out to the sides. The center of a trap mix belongs to the 808, kick, snare, and vocal — hats live off to the sides.

Real talk: if you have to keep turning the hats up to hear the pattern, the problem is masking, not volume. Check what else is living in 500 Hz–2 kHz (usually the melody loop) and carve there instead.

Melodies and Space: Dark, Wide, and Out of the Way

Trap melodies — bell lines, dark pads, pitched vocal loops — should feel wide and moody, not front and center. Two moves get you there.

High-pass the melody around 150–200 Hz so it never touches the 808’s territory. This is the part nobody tells you: the “muddy beat” problem is almost always a melody loop leaking low-mid energy on top of the 808, not the 808 itself.

Then push the melody into the space around the mix: stereo widening or a doubled-and-panned copy, plus a longer, darker reverb (roll the top off the reverb return). The dry drums up the middle against a wide, wet melody is a huge part of that modern trap depth — listen to a Southside or Wheezy beat and notice how the melody feels like it’s behind the drums.

Leave Room for the Vocal (Even on an Instrumental)

If this beat is getting vocals — and in trap, it almost always is — mix with that space reserved from the start. The vocal will live roughly 1–5 kHz, dead center.

That means: don’t let the melody loop dominate the center of the stereo field, don’t boost the beat’s presence range just to make the instrumental sparkle, and don’t master the two-track so loud and dense there’s nowhere for a vocal to sit. A beat that sounds slightly unfinished on its own often mixes into a song better than one that’s wall-to-wall full. The Master Bus: Loud Comes Last

Keep the master chain simple: a glue compressor doing 1–2 dB of gain reduction at a slow attack, maybe a touch of saturation, then a limiter to bring the level up. Aim for around -8 to -10 LUFS for a trap beat that competes commercially — but push the limiter only until you hear the 808 start to flinch, then stop.

If you have to slam the limiter to feel loud, the problem is upstream — usually the low end eating all your headroom. Go back to the 808/kick relationship before you crush the master. And test on real speakers: phone, car, laptop. Trap gets consumed on phones more than any other genre, so if the 808 doesn’t read on a phone speaker, the mix isn’t done — no matter how it sounds in your headphones.

The Quick Checklist

Run every trap mix through this before you call it finished: gain staged with the 808 as the anchor. 808 saturated enough to read on a phone. Kick and 808 in separate lanes (EQ, sidechain, or both). Hats high-passed, de-harshed, and panned off-center. Melody high-passed and pushed wide, out of the vocal’s lane. Master bus glued, limited, and tested on at least three playback systems.
