How to Prepare Your Mix for Mastering (Without Ruining It First)
Your song is done. The vocals sit right, the low end isn’t fighting itself, you’ve listened to it in the car and in your headphones and you’re finally happy with it. Now you need it mastered — and you’re staring at the bounce window wondering what settings to use and whether you’re about to mess up a mix you spent three weeks on.
Here’s the thing: most of the tracks that come to me for mastering arrive with problems that had nothing to do with the mix. Limiter still slammed on the master bus. Bounced as a 128 kbps MP3. Peaking at 0.0 dB with no room left to work. The mix was fine. The handoff wasn’t. So let me break down exactly how to prepare your mix for mastering, in the order you should do it, so the person on the other end can actually make your song louder and better instead of spending their time undoing your last twenty minutes of work.
First, Understand What Mastering Actually Does
Mastering is the last step before your song goes out. It’s one engineer, on one set of trusted speakers, doing three jobs: making the track loud enough to sit next to everything else on Spotify, making small tonal corrections so it translates on every system, and making sure the file itself meets streaming spec.
What mastering is not: a rescue mission for a mix that isn’t finished.
A mastering engineer is working on your stereo file — the whole song glued into two channels. They can shave a decibel off the 250 Hz region across the entire track. They cannot turn your vocal up. They cannot fix a snare that’s too loud or a bass that’s masking your kick. Those are mix moves, and if the mix isn’t there yet, mastering makes the problem louder, not smaller.
So before anything else: be honest about whether the mix is done. If your low end still sounds cloudy, that’s usually why a mix sounds muddy and it’s worth another pass. If the whole thing sounds amateur but you can’t name why, go back through common mixing mistakes beginners make first. Mastering is a polish. Bring it something worth polishing.
Step 1: Take the Limiter Off Your Master Bus
This is the big one, and it’s the step people fight me on the most.
Somewhere in your mixing process you probably threw a limiter on the master bus so the track would play back at a competitive volume while you worked. That’s fine — good, even. It helps you judge balance at a realistic loudness. But it comes off before you bounce.
A limiter squashes your peaks and glues your dynamics down. Once that’s printed into the file, it’s permanent. The mastering engineer now has a flattened track with nothing left to shape, and the only thing they can do is make it louder still, which is how songs end up sounding brittle and lifeless.
Same goes for anything else doing heavy lifting on the master: multiband compressors, maximizers, clippers, “one-knob loudness” plugins. Bypass them all.
The exception: if you’ve got gentle bus compression or a touch of saturation on the master that’s genuinely part of your sound — 1 to 2 dB of gain reduction, the thing that makes the track feel glued — leave it. That’s a creative choice, not a loudness choice. Just mention it when you send the file so the engineer knows it’s intentional.
Step 2: Leave Real Headroom
Headroom is the empty space between your loudest peak and 0 dBFS, which is the ceiling where digital audio clips. Mastering needs that space to work in.
Aim for peaks around -6 dBFS. Anywhere between -3 and -6 is fine.
That’s your true peak level, not your average. Look at the master meter during the loudest section — usually the last chorus — and that’s the number you’re reading. If you’re touching 0.0, pull the master fader down until you’re at -6 and bounce it there.
Two things people get wrong here:
- “But then it’ll be quiet.” It will. That’s the point. Loudness comes from mastering. Your job is to hand over a clean, dynamic file — the engineer will bring it up to streaming level with far better tools than a master fader.
- Turning down the master fader instead of fixing the mix. If you had to pull the master down 10 dB to stop clipping, your individual tracks are too hot and your plugins have been running in the red the whole time. That’s a gain staging problem, and it’s worth fixing at the source before you bounce.
One more: turn off any dithering in your bounce settings. Dither is a tiny bit of noise added when you reduce bit depth, and it belongs at the very end of the chain — the mastering engineer’s end, not yours. Applying it twice adds noise for no reason.
Step 3: Bounce the Right File
This part is simple and non-negotiable.
- Format: WAV or AIFF. Never MP3. An MP3 has permanently thrown away audio data to save space, and mastering an MP3 amplifies the artifacts that were hiding underneath.
- Bit depth: 24-bit minimum. 32-bit float is even better if your DAW offers it. Don’t bounce 16-bit — that’s a delivery format, not a working format.
- Sample rate: whatever your session is. If you recorded and mixed at 48 kHz, bounce at 48 kHz. Do not upsample to 96, and do not downsample to 44.1. Every conversion is a small quality hit, and the mastering engineer will handle the final conversion once, properly.
- Stereo interleaved, not split mono files, unless you’re asked otherwise.
Bounce offline if your DAW gives you the choice, and bounce the full song — not a bounce of a bounce, not a screen recording, not an export from a reference playlist. Straight from the session.
Step 4: Give the File Room to Breathe
Leave a little silence at the head and tail of your bounce — half a second before the first sound, and let the last reverb tail or vocal decay ring out completely before the file ends.
Nothing sounds more amateur than a master with the tail chopped off. If your session marker cuts at the exact sample the last note stops, the reverb dies mid-air. Drag your bounce region out a couple seconds past the end. The engineer will trim it cleanly.
Same on the front: a hard cut into the first kick can produce a click. A tiny bit of silence prevents it.
Step 5: Name It Like a Professional
This costs you nothing and it makes you look like you’ve done this before.

Include the version number. If you send a revision two days later, “final_FINAL_v2.wav” tells the engineer nothing about which one is newer, and a mastered version of the wrong mix is the kind of mistake that costs everybody a week.
If you’re sending multiple songs, one folder, one file each, versions clearly marked.
Step 6: Send a Reference Track and a Short Note
This is the part nobody tells you, and it’s the single biggest thing you can do to get a master you actually like.
Send one commercially released song that sounds like where you want to end up. Not a song you like. A song whose sound — the weight of the low end, the brightness up top, how aggressive or open it feels — is the target. That reference tells the engineer more in thirty seconds than a paragraph of description ever will.
Then write two or three sentences:
- What you want it to feel like (“warm, not bright — this is a slow R&B record”)
- Anything you’re unsure about (“the 808 might be too loud, tell me if it is”)
- Where it’s going (“Spotify and Apple, releasing in three weeks”)

Step 7: Send Instrumental and Clean Versions Too
Bounce these at the same time, same settings, same headroom:
- Instrumental (no lead vocal, keep the backgrounds if the song needs them)
- Clean / radio edit if the song has explicit language
- A cappella if you might want it later
You don’t strictly need these for mastering, but you will need them for sync placements, live performances, radio, and playlists. Bouncing them now while the session is open and everything is exactly where you left it takes five minutes. Rebuilding the session in eight months to get an instrumental takes an afternoon and never sounds quite the same.
The Quick Checklist
Before you hit send, run through this:
- Mix is genuinely finished — no “the engineer will fix it” thinking
- Limiter and maximizer off the master bus
- Peaks around -6 dBFS, no clipping
- Dither off
- WAV or AIFF, 24-bit, session sample rate, stereo
- Silence at the head, full tail at the end
- Filename with artist, title, version, and specs
- Reference track and a short note attached
- Instrumental and clean versions bounced
Nine things. Maybe twenty minutes of work. And it’s the difference between a master that sounds like your song, only better, and a master that’s just your song, only louder.
